Chittoor: The verdict of the Supreme Court directing the Government of India to provide pensionary benefits to all the employees working in Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) in the country was a historic judgement, said the President of the Saptagiri Grameena Bank Officers
Association Muni Bhaskar Raju, while speaking to The Hans India here on Thursday.

After making relentless efforts by the Union leaders explaining the need for providing pensions to the RRB staff, the Supreme Court has directed the Central government to grant the pension facility to all the RRB staff, unconditionally, he added. Raju said that there are 56 RRBs functioning in the country in which 80,000 employees are working without pensions.

“Above 20,000 employees, who retired from their services in RRBs earlier were badly deprived of pensions. It is regretted that 2,000 retired employees of RRBs lost their lives out of sheer frustration due to lack of pensionary benefits in the country,” he added.

The Apex Court on Wednesday delivered a landmark judgment in favour of the RRB staff directing the Union government to remit the pensionary dues for all the employees within three months. Referring the status of RRBs in the State, he said that there are four RRBs namely SGB, Andhra Pragati Grameena Bank, Chaitanya Godavari Grameena Bank and Grameena Vikas Bank in which more than 3,000 employees are working.

“There is a serious proposal to amalgamate all the four RRBs in the State under a single umbrella while the Central government was examining the pros and cons of amalgamation,” he stated.
