Rajamahendravaram: The water level in river Godavari is increasing slowly as the canals in Eastern, Central and Western deltas were closed from April 19 for summer works and thecanals will be reopened for kharif season in the first week of June and the water will be released for drinking water purpose only.

Along with the closure of canals, 2,000 cusecs of Sabari river water and water coming from the upstream of river is also a reason for increasing water-level in the river.

Currently, the water-level at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage is 12.67 meters as against 12.07 meters on April 23 and the water-level reached to 13.67 metersin a week. At present there is 2.10 tmcft of water available in the barrage as against its original capacity of 3 tmc ft of water. In a span of three days thewater-level reached to 41 feet at Pushkar Ghat from 38 feet. Because of increase of water-level, sand dunes at Pushkar Ghat andKotilingalaGhat are disappearing slowly. Rajamahendravaram Municipal Corporation (RMC) started clearing of sand dunes at Pushkar Ghat one-week ago and stopped the work because of an increase in water level.

According to Water Resources Department Superintending Engineer N Krishna Rao, the barrage will get its full water level of 13.67 meters shortly as 3,000 cusecs of water is receiving from Sabari river along with its water. As monsoon season starts from June, it will also help in increase of waterlevel in the river, he added.
