Vijayawada: Deputy Transport Commissioner E Meera Prasad said road accidents can be prevented if the drivers follow the road safety rules strictly.

Addressing the gathering to mark the conclusion of Road Safety Week celebrations organised under the aegis of police and transport departments since April 23 in Krishna district on Monday, Meera Prasad said the number of deaths in road accidents declined in Krishna district in 2017 compared to 2016.

He said 735 persons died in the mishaps in 2017 against 839 in 2016 with decline in 12 per cent deaths. He said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced ‘Road Safety Champion’ award to Krishna district, which stood third in the state in reducing the deaths in road accidents.

Joint Commissioner of Police Kanti Rana Tata said most accidents are caused by human errors. He said the accidents can be reduced by adopting safe driving practices. Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) T Ramaprasada Rao, additional deputy commissioner of police T V Nagaraju, ACPs, circle inspectors and other staff present on the occasion.

The city police and transport department officials created awareness on the road safety and distributed roses, chocolates and conducted bike and car rallies.

On the occasion, JCP Kanti Rana Tata flagged off the vehicle rally near the transport office, MG Road. Staff from traffic, transport, 108 services, ambulance services and fire department participated in the rally which went up to Benz circle and returned.
