Chittoor: District Collector PS Pradyumna has directed officials of the Rural Water Supply (RWS) department to resume transportation of drinking water through hired tankers to all the villages facing water shortage.

He asked Tahsildars and Mandal Development Officers to visit the villages and assess the gravity of water situation. He gave standing instructions to civic body commissioners of Chittoor, Tirupati, Madanapalle, Srikalahasti, Punganur, Puttur, Palamaner and Nagari to give high priority for resolving drinking water crisis.

Addressing the officials at a review meeting held at the Collectorate here on Monday, Pradyumna said groundwater levels have come down drastically in the last two weeks in the district due to scorching heat.

He stated that he received more representations related to drinking water problem in villages in weekly grievance programme. “Officials should go for field visits and assess drinking water needs and send a detailed report to me,” he added.

The Collector reiterated that there was no paucity of funds for supplying drinking water to water-starving villages and towns. He advised the petitioners not to take risk to visit Chittoor on every Monday to submit their petitions at the Collectorate as Meekosam programmes are being held in mandals also.

Joint Collector-2 Chandramouli, DRDA Project Director Ravi Prakash Reddy, DEO Pandu Rangaiah, DMHO Dr Vijaya Gouri and others were present. Earlier, the Collector attended the Meekosam programme and received petitions from people.
