Vijayawada: Heavy rain lashed the city on Thursday afternoon disrupting the normal life. Low-lying areas in the city inundated due to the impact of sudden cloudburst, which lasted about two hours.

For the second time, rain lashed the city in three days giving respite from the scorching heat. Weather had changed suddenly on Tuesday afternoon in the city. Since then, the temperature levels dropped. Rain started suddenly on Thursday afternoon inundating low-lying areas.

Thousands of people suffered due to sudden rain as water logged on the main roads at Moghalrajpuram, Machavaram, Wynch Pet, K L Rao Nagar, Mutyalampadu, Governorpet, MG Road and other parts of the city. As usual water logged for three hours at Low-bridge near Kaleswara Rao Market forcing the commuters to face hardships.

Petty traders like fruit, vegetable and flower vendors lost their livelihood due to lack of buyers. Power supply was disrupted in some parts of the city. Rainfall also recorded in Nuzvid, Gudivada, Machilipatnam, Gannavaram, Tiruvuru and other parts of Krishna district. The district administration has opened control room in Vijayawada and other towns.

District Collector B Lakshmikantham on Thursday appealed to people to be on high alert in view of the warning given by the Disaster Management Department about the possibility of striking of lightning, heavy rains coupled with gales in some parts of Krishna district.

He said the district administration has arranged phone numbers to help the paddy farmers. He said paddy farmers can get information on procurement from the phone numbers of 7702003571 and 9963479156. The Collector has asked the officials of revenue, power, municipal and Panchayat Raj department to be available to the people in view of expected heavy rains, thunderstorms and gales in the district.
