Tirupati: At last, the Government Maternity Hospital has been shifted to Institute of Pregnant Women (IPW) building on Friday after performing pooja and other rituals. It was the much talked about building which was built at a cost of Rs 77 crore.

The foundation stone was laid for the building in April 2012 and was first inaugurated in February 2014. Soon after its completion, it was handed over to the SVIMS to run its Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women as it became necessary for them to keep 150 seats in the college as per MCI norms. The construction of own building for the medical college was delayed for one reason or the other.

After repeated protests by former MP Chinta Mohan in whose term the approvals for the building came, SVIMS finally handed over it in August 2017 which was re-inaugurated by then Vice-President elect M Venkaiah Naidu. Even after that, the Government Maternity Hospital did not move into the new facility for want of infrastructure and human resources.

In November 2017, the Principal Secretary of Health and Family Welfare department Poonam Malakondaiah issued a memo to hand over the building to the Superintendent of maternity hospital. Since then, there was no progress in providing the required infrastructure in the new facility and the maternity hospital continued in the existing building.

Recently, the Director of Medical Education visited the IPW building and asked the authorities concerned to vacate it. Accordingly, on Friday, maternity hospital was moved into the new building. Hospital Superintendent Dr V Bhavani, SV Medical College Principal Dr NV Ramanaiah, Ruia hospital Superintendent Dr Sidda Naik have participated.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Madhavi has said that she will write to higher authorities to provide supporting and nursing staff as the new facility has been handed over to maternity hospital.
