Srikakulam: An engineering college would be started from current academic year 2018-19 at BR Ambedkar University (BRAU) in Etcherla. Earlier, executive council of BRAU proposed and approved it when G Nageswara Rao was serving as an In-Charge Vice-Chancellor of BRAU.

Subsequently, AP State Council for Higher Education (APSCHE) and the state government gave their nod for engineering college. Later, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) also approved it and it is the first government engineering college in the backward district Srikakulam.

Two floors have been allotted in an existing four-storeyed building for engineering college on the BRAU campus. University authorities, Etcherla MLA and Minister for Energy Kimidi Kala Venkata Rao are waiting for the schedule of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in order to fix date for the inauguration.

This year, the college was started with three courses, electrical communication and electronics (ECE), computer science and electronics (CSE) and mechanical engineering. In each course, 40 seats are available and total 120 seats would be allocated for this year and would be enhanced later years by observing demand from candidates.

For these courses, existing physics and chemistry laboratories would be used for both PG and engineering courses. For the first year of engineering in all three courses, seven to 10 faculty are enough, and guidelines also fixed for the recruitment. A computer laboratory would be set up for computer programming and network management (CPNM) which is also one of the subjects in engineering course.

“Fee for each course is yet to be finalised, we are holding discussions on fee structure considering the backwardness of the district and initial maintenance of the college”, BRAU registrar Korupolu Raghu Babu told The Hans India.
