Kadapa: In separate incidents at Madhavaram Podu, and Vagileti Kona in Railway Kodur mandal, police arrested four red sanders smugglers and recovered 38 red sanders logs weighing 1.18 tonne worth Rs 1.50crore on Monday. Two cars, , five mobile phones, Rs 13,000 cash was also recovered from the accused.

The accused were identified as Giri Babu (37) of Simharajapuram village, A Jayaprakash (25) of Kanaka Chatram village, G Natarajan (28) of Sendriyanapalem village of Tiruvalluru district of Tamil Nadu, N Srikanth (24) of Vavileru village of Chejerla mandal in Nellore district.

Addressing pressing press conference here, district SP Babuji Attada said following a tip-off police conducted raids at both places and arrested the accused while they were illegally transporting the red sanders logs. He said among them, Giri Babu, who was acquainted with several interstate smugglers in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, started his career as a helper for Rs 1500 salary in one factory in Chennai, about decade ago.

He earned crores with in span of 10 years by indulging in red sanders smuggling. The SP said that the accused used to transport red sanders by road in trucks under granite stones, ceramic tiles, food grains, vegetables, sea foods, bricks from Lankamalleswara , Seshachalam, Nallamala forest areas to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

The SP said Giri Babu was also bringing the wood cutters from Juvvadhi Malai village of Tamil Nadu on salary basis. Presently, he is running Rs 5 crore worth two garments units in Tiruvalluru district. He is facing 42 cases in Kadapa and 10 cases in Chittoor district. The SP congratulated the police personnel for arresting the culprits and declared rewards to them.
