Vijayawada: Archer and Arjuna awardee Jyothi Surekha has taken exception to the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) for deducting Rs 15 lakh from the cash award of Rs 1 crore announced to her by AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

She said Rs 15 lakh was given to Cherukuri Satyanarayana on the pretext that he was her Archery coach. She said that after receiving the Arjuna award, the CM had announced the cash award of Rs 1 crore, a house site and a Group -1 job in the presence of Sports Minister Kollu Ravindra, VMC Mayor K Sridhar and MLA Gadde Rammohana Rao in August 2017.

Addressing mediapersons here on Sunday, Surekha said that on May 3 the government issued a GO releasing the cash award amount to her. In the GO, it is said that Rs 15lakh would go to her coach Cherukuri Satyanarayana who in fact was not her coach. Surekha demanded stern action against the officials who were involved in slashing the award amount and paying it to Satyanarayana.

She announced that she will go on hunger strike if action is not taken against those responsible for the slashing her cash award amount. She further said the government has to provide separate incentives to coaches, after receiving an affidavit from the player confirming the name of the coach.

She appealed to the department not to discriminate players on the basis of caste in making payment of incentive amounts. Surekha’s father V Surendra insisted that the SAAP officers should rectify their mistakes. He said after receiving the Arjuna Award, Surekha won 5 International Medals for which she has not received any appreciation or any cash award from SAAP.
