Rajamahendravaram: The prisons department is contemplating to introduce reforms in jails in addition to ongoing reforms for the benefit of prisoners. Speaking to The Hans India here, coastal region deputy inspector-general (prisons department) Dr I Srinivasa Rao said the government will give importance to mould jail inmates into responsible citizens by implementing reforms in prisons.
As part of it, many reforms are under execution in the jails including central prisons and district jails, he said and added plans are afoot to start digital libraries in central prison at Rajamahendravaram along with 10 district jails in the coastal region.
Stating that digital library is functioning at central prison in Visakhapatnam, the DIG said 10 computers would be provided in digital library for the benefit of prisoners along with an equipment to store thousands of books. In Rajamahendravaram central prison, he said the department has planned to cultivate banana and papaya gardens by arranging a fencing with Biryani and Neredu trees.
Srinivasa Rao said vacant land in the central prison premises would be developed and a 30-bedded hospital would be constructed in the central prison with all facilities to treat prisoners.
A showroom to market products of central prison was also under construction, he said and added the prisoners were running an Indian Oil Corporation petrol bunk in the city successfully. The semi-open-air jail was also working well, where the prisoners were cultivating vegetables and mangoes, the DIG said.
