Vizianagaram: Due to the rise in temperatures in the past few days, the water levels in the irrigation projects are coming down. Though the water in that reservoirs is not required for rabi crops, the present situation may affect the drinking water schemes in those areas.

The district received heavy rainfall in the last week but it could not help to raise the level of water in these reservoirs as there were no rains in the catchment areas of the rivers. So, the water, which is accumulated with the recent rains, is being evaporated with the high temperatures.

Vengalarayasagar, Peddagedda, Vattigedda and Tatipudi are important water resources in the district. The rural water supply division is pumping the water to around 50 villages, along with Bobbili and Salur Municipalities, from these reservoirs.

Vegavathi Suvarnamukhi and Gomukhi are the main source for these reservoirs. The reservoirs are being filled with water from these rivers and hill streams. But the situation is tough now as the water resources are reaching to dead storage level.

Actually, the monsoons will reach the costal districts in mid June and the heavy rains will be started in third week of June only. Till then, the people have to bear the hot summer and adjust with less water, which is being supplied by the government.

These projects are supplying drinking water to Badangi, RB Puram, Seethanagaram, Salur, Makkuva, Terlam and Tatipudi water is being supplied to Gantyada, Vizianagaram and Vizag city also.

But the water levels in these reservoirs may not be sufficient till the end of June. The rural water supply department would plan as per the demand and it will minimise the supply. Sometimes, they would release the water on alternative days.

T Atchyutavalli, municipal chairperson of Bobbili said: “As of now, we have no problem but if the situation is tough, we will make alternative arrangements. We will supply the water with tankers. Public need not worry. We are here to serve them”.

The storage capacity of Vengalarayasagar is 161 feet and at present it has 150 feet of water but in May 2017, the water level was 157 feet. Capacity of Peddagedda is 213 feet and at present it has 204 feet but in May 2017 may it had 206 feet. Tatipudi can store 297 feet of water but now it has 280 feet but in May 2017 it had 283 feet of water.
