Vijayawada: The leaders of various farmers’ unions and associations presented a memorandum to the District Collector here on Thursday to be forwarded to Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha chairman seeking enactment of legislation concerning to farmers.

Speaking at the round-table held here on the occasion, former minister Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao said the memorandum sought intervention of both Sumitra Mahajan (Lok Sabha Speaker) and M Venkaiah Naidu (Rajya Sabha Chairman) to take initiative in passing the bills covering farmers issues in Parliament by convening a special session.

“Bills such as Minimum Support Price Guarantee bill and Waiver of Farmers’ Loans bill were moved in Lok Sabha based on recommendations of National Farmers Commission which took the observations of M S Swaminathan Committee into account,” he added.

He said over 193 farmers’ associations and 21 parties supported the bills which were meant to alleviate the woes of farmers. For the past two decades, he said over three lakh farmers committed suicide for various reasons in the country and in 2015 alone 12,802 farmers ended their lives.

Former drainage board member Erneni Nagendranath appealed to the Centre and state government to adopt the Kerala Government model, which has successfully implemented the minimum support price and waiver of loans.

He said the government should add 10 per cent of depreciation on tools, 10 per cent of rental value of land and 10 per cent on risk factors while determining the cost of produce and add 50 per cent to it to fix the minimum support price on the yield.

Nagendranath said that the big land owners were not suffering much as they had given their land holdings on lease but the main sufferers were small, marginal and tenant farmers. He said the signature campaign would be launched to intensify the agitation from June.

Congress party official spokesperson Kolanukonda Sivaji and TDP Krishna district Rythu wing president Chalasani Anjaneyulu were present.
