Vijayawada: A coolers manufacturing unit and other five small industries were gutted in a fire accident at New Autonagar on the outskirts of the city on Thursday. The loss is estimated at Rs 10 crore as per the preliminary inquiry by the officials.

All the six companies, including coolers manufacturing unit, furniture unit, the two plastic and pipes industries, were reduced to ashes but luckily no one was injured in the mishap. The fire, the police, the NDRF teams and the district administration led by the District Collector rushed to the spot.

The entire area was covered with thick black smoke on the Tadigadapa-Nidamanuru Road and flames were controlled after four hours of continuous efforts by the fire-fighting teams.

According to officials, the fire abroke out in the coolers manufacturing unit at 11 am. The staff, who were working at that time in the unit, noticed the flames and immediately came out to inform the officials. But the fire engines reached the spot only after 30 minutes. The flames soon engulfed the neighboring five small industrial units also.

However, the officials understanding the seriousness of the mishap immediately swung into action. As many as 15 fire engines were pressed into service and three ambulances and the special teams were sent to the spot from other parts of the district. Though the entire area is full of industries, the fire department and NDRF teams managed to control the flames.

Actually, the flames entered nearby Oil Company but the fire-fighting personnel successfully controlled the flames. If the flames were not controlled, the loss would have been more, said local people.

District Collector B Lakshmikantham visited the spot, along with the officials of other departments, and supervised the operation. He also ordered an inquiry into the incident. The officials, including the joint collector, the joint commissioner of police, industries department deputy inspector, would conduct the inquiry and the report should be submitted within 15 days, he said and added that the total loss is yet to be estimated.

Minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao, MLA Bode Prasad and several officials also visited the spot. However, the owners of the industries were not on the spot to complain against anyone. But the local people said that though the stretch of Nidamanuru-Tadigadapa is an industrial as well as residential area, there is no fire service facility available.
