More than 80 tourists had a close brush with death when a tourist boat - Royal Godavari – in which they were travelling on river Godavari caught fire while it was on its way to a tourism spot in East Godavari district on Friday.

Rajamahendravaram: More than 80 tourists had a close brush with death when a tourist boat - Royal Godavari – in which they were travelling on river Godavari caught fire while it was on its way to a tourism spot in East Godavari district on Friday.

The boat set off from a village called Angaluru at about 9.30 am for Papikondalu known for its scenic beauty when the fire started in the canteen where tea was being prepared. The passengers, all of whom were from Angaluru village, jumped out of the boat and ran to safety as soon as flames rose and devoured the entire boat but not before some anxious moments.

As soon as fire started, the driver steered the boat to a nearby landmass and as it came to a standstill near it, the passengers who were by then came down to level 1 from level 2 (double decker boat) jumped to safety.

The operators of the boat simultaneously informed officials who sent rescue boats with swimmers but by then all the passengers were safe on the land mass. The passengers said the gas leak took place in the kitchen where tea was being prepared which might have caught fire.

Later the passengers were taken to Devipatnam police station where they were provided refreshments and were then sent to Rajamahendravaram. Learning about the incident, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu spoke to District Collector Kartikeya Misra and asked him to provide all the help that the passengers might need.

The Devipatnam police have taken into custody the boat driver and the other staff on the boat after registering a case against them. “We have arrested the boat owner also,” Inspector Ch Venkateswara Rao said.
