Tirupati: This summer, hot weather has not only making life miserable to humans, but also hit the wild animals in Seshachalam Tirumala forest. Owing to drying up of water resources in the deep forest, wild animals are coming out of their natural habitats in search of water to quench their thirst, which putting their life at risk.

The death of a leopard after being hit by an unidentified vehicle Tirumala forest ghat a couple of days ago is illustrative of perils they are facing. At least five wild animals have died in the last three months in this manner.

According to forest department sources, leopard, deer, bear, wild boars and other animals are straying into human habitats like Tirumala township and outskirts of Tirupati from Seshachalam forests in search of water and food.

Apart from this, wild animals are crisscrossing both the ghat roads of Tirumala at night and occasionally during the day in search of water. TTD authorities obtained permission to build the ghat roads from the Union ministry of environment and forests long ago on the condition that all steps would be taken to conserve wild animals in and around of these two ghat roads.

As per the undertaking, the TTD should maintain speed breakers at road turnings, and other accident-prone points in the both ghat roads. More importantly, it should erect signboards on the wild animal movements on the sides of forest roads to warn motorists as well as public.

Speaking to The Hans India, Tirupati wild life divisional forest officer (DFO) M Nagarjuna Reddy said observation of speed limits by motorists is mandatory on the ghat roads but it is honoured only in breach.

“TTD authorities should take necessary steps for the protection of wild animals including provision of water in artificial ponds for them. Creating awareness about prevention of animal road accidents on ghat road is also an important responsibility of the TTD forest authorities,” he said.

Nagarjuna Reddy said after the careful examination of this burning problem, they would submit a few recommendations for protection of wild animal on ghat roads on both directions.

The DFO said under exit provision is made (underbridges) for animals to cross roads in forest areas in developed countries like the US, UK. Besides, fencing is installed along the forest roads to prevent the straying of wild animals into roads.

He stressed the need for the TTD to come forward to implement wild animal conservation measures strictly along the both ghat roads between Tirumla and Tirupati in the wake of a series of incidents where animals are run over by vehicles.
