Visakhapatnam: Though the World Bank agreed to sanction funds for giving a facelift to Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP), there is no progress in reconstruction of the park for the past one year due to delay in completion of the Detailed Project Report (DPR).

The government has entrusted the DPR work to Chhattisgarh-based company one year ago and asked the company to submit the DPR within six months. However, the company is not yet completed the DPR and the government has extended time for two times, but there is no progress from the consultancy and again it‘s asking the government for one more extension. With the delay in completing the DPR, the World Bank team is expressing it displeasure over the project.

The World Bank has agreed to sanction funds for the reconstruction of the IGZP, which suffered damage to the tune of Rs 3.5 crore during the Hudhud cyclone in 2014. Though the animals in the park were protected from the natural disaster, the park incurred heavy damages.

The World Bank for the first time sanctioned the financial assistance to a Zoo Park in South Asia as a part of Andhra Pradesh Disaster Recovery Project (APDRP). With this, the department of forest has decided to reconstruct the entire zoo park, including development of Kambalakonda Eco Tourism Park.

Under the APDRP, the officials said that Rs 36 crore would be spent for the renovation of the park, Rs 15 crore on Kambalakonda Eco Tourism Park and Rs 75 crore for development of palm forest and other works of the park. The WB team asked the government to complete the DPR within six months. But the consultancy is not completing the work for the past one year.

The DPR is supposed to be prepared with improvement of day and night kraals, construction of new night enclosures for primates, internal design, amenities, enhancement of the visitors’ amenities. The enclosures and roofs would be made with scratch proof, weather resistant and the constructions should remain intact even during severe cyclones.

Some new works, including night enclosures for tigers, leopards, cheetah and jaguar also mentioned in the DPR. “Yes, the consultancy company is not yet submitted the DPR and the date was extended for two times. We are still waiting for the DPR”, said curator of the IGZP Yesoda Bai R.
