Hyderabad: At a time when Andhra Pradesh is peeved over the Centre not keeping the promises made in the AP State Reorganisation Act, 2014, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday gave in-principle approval for the establishment of a Central University in Janthaluru village in Anantapur district.

Setting up of a Central university in the state is one of the promisies made in the bifurcation Act. The varsity named ‘Central University of Andhra Pradesh’, with a provision of Rs 450 crore has been approved as first phase expenditure.

Announcing the development, Union Minister for Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar tweeted: “Narendra Modi government gives yet another premier institution to Andhra Pradesh.

The Union Cabinet gives in principle nod for setting up of "Central University in the State of Andhra Pradesh" in village Janthaluru of Anantapur district. The setting up of ‘Central University of Andhra Pradesh’ in the backward region of Rayalaseema will create more educational infra facilities, which will benefit thousands of students.

The Cabinet also approved the proposal for operationalization of the Central University in the transit camp to enable commencement of academic activities from the year 2018-19.

It also approved the proposal for operationalisation of the Central University in a transit campus initially by forming a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 in order to give a legal status to it till the amendment to the Central Universities Act, 2009 is enacted and to enable commencement of academic activities from 2018-19.

The new Central University would be mentored by an existing Central University until its governing structure is in place, an official press release said.
