Vijayawada: Newborn (18-day-old) from Tadepalli was admitted to Andhra Hospital on April 20 with complex heart disease known as obstructive total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage (TAPVD) where blood vessels that goes to the heart were placed in abnormal position.

One of the rare complex varieties of TAPVD successfully got operated on May 3. Now baby is 30 days old, feeding well, ready for discharge.

Addressing the media here on Wednesday, Dr PV Rama Rao, head of children’s services, said that they have been doing newborn heart surgeries regularly, successfully performed 27 surgeries so far. This success was possible only because of team effort of paediatric cardiac team.

This is the only centre in the state where all types of neonatal heart surgeries are being done, with backup support of tertiary level 3 neonatal intensive care unit.
