Tirupati ranked as India’s best in solid waste disposal

Tirupati: The pilgrim city has been ranked as India’s best city in solid waste management in the population category of 1 to 3 lakh. The rankings were given as part of the Swachh Survekshan-2018 survey conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

The top rank to Tirupati is the effort of more than 600 sanitation workers and supervisors of the Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT), who have implemented best practices in the solid waste management. In 2017, the Tirupati secured ninth place in national-level rankings.

According to officials, the MCT had cleared 110 tonnes of solid waste in 2017 and in 2018, it rose to 209 tonnes. The sanitation workers are segregating the solid waste as dry and wet at the time of waste collection from the houses in residential colonies.

Later, the waste is being sent to sub-centres for separating there as dry and wet. The dry waste is shifted to Ramapuram dumping yard for disposing it in scientific manner while the wet waste is being transported to Thukivakam for converting the wet waste into manure.

For implemention of better practices in solid waste disposal, the civic body officials are distributing green and red plastic bins to the residents for segregating the dry and wet waste.

The civic body set up two advanced bio-chest machines in Tirupati for converting wet vegetable waste into bio-manure. Speaking to The Hans India, MCT Commissioner V Vijaya Rama Raju has expressed happiness over Tirupati getting India’s top rank in the solid waste management. He gave credit to sanitation workers and city residents.
