Vijayawada: Heated arguments ensued between the ruling TDP corporators and the Opposition YSRCP corporators at the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Council meeting on Thursday over the proposal made by TDP Leader and Deputy Mayor Gogula Venkata Ramana seeking the council to write a letter to the Union government to accord Special Category Status to the state.

The proposal said Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu had waited four years for the Special Category Status and a letter should be written to the Union government to grant the SCS.

This proposal had irked the YSRCP corporators, who raised objection saying why the ruling TDP had not passed a resolution for the past four years. Some YSRCP corporators raised slogans against the Telugu Desam government holding placards.

Mayor Koneru Sridhar, who chaired the council meeting, suspended two YSRCP corporators J Purnamma and Bijaan Bi saying that it was wrong to raise slogans against the Chief Minister.

Sridhar said the Chief Minister is the representative of the five crore Telugu people and questioned as to how slogans against him would be tolerated in the council meeting.

He asked the VMC staff to forcibly take away the two corporators from the council hall. On the other hand, the YSRCP Floor Leader B Punyaseela, corporators Chandana Suresh, P Sandhyarani, Shaik Asif, K Damodar and others tried to prevent the staff from sending the two corporators from the council hall.

Deputy Mayor Gogula Ramana, senior corporator Chennupati Gandhi and others engaged in argument with the YSRCP corporators. Finally, two women corporators were forcibly taken away from the council meeting hall.

Later, the angry YSRCP corporators staged protests outside the council hall for 10 minutes opposing the suspension of two corporators. They said Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has been cheating the people of state on SCS for four years. Later, except two suspended corporators, remaining participated in the council meeting, which discussed various subjects.
