Vijayawada: Nearly 60 per cent of area in the country is prone to earthquakes and the nation needs proper planning to face the disasters, said Vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu.

He laid the foundation stone for construction of the South Indian campus of the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) at Kondapavuluru village in Gannavaram mandal of Krishna district on Tuesday.

The State government allotted 10 acres for the construction of the South Indian campus, which will cost Rs 36.76 crore. This project is one of the projects sanctioned to the State as per AP Reorganisation Act-2014.

Venkaiah Naidu, addressing the gathering on the occasion, said India had experienced disasters like cyclones, floods, tsunamis at different places since 2004. He stressed upon the need to prepare proper plan to face the disasters and to minimise the loss.

He said that the Central government and the State government worked in coordination during the Hudhud cyclone in Vizag and reduced the loss of human life to a great extent.

Referring to the disaster prone areas of the country, Venkaiah Naidu said 5,700 km coast line in India is prone to tsunamis, 68 per cent land is prone to droughts or cyclones and 40 million hectares of land is flood prone, he added.

Venkaiah Naidu said that nearly 60 per cent area in the country is prone to earthquakes. He stressed upon the need to strengthen the disaster management to reduce the loss of life and property during the disasters.

People's participation is must to reduce the loss during disasters, he said and pointed out that ability to face disasters is the real development. He said that he asked the Ministry of Home Affairs to complete the construction works of the southern campus of NIDM in one year.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said the southern campus of the NIDM will be very useful to all South Indian states. India is marching ahead in risk management with advanced technology in recent years, he said.

He felt that the southern campus will enhance the capacity building and become a great research and training centre in the coming years. He said India did not have resources earlier to tackle the disasters. But now it became one of the leading countries in the world in disaster management.

He said that the Ministry of Home affairs would extend all kinds of help and support to the Government of Andhra Pradesh in disaster mitigation.
Minister for Law Affairs and Sports Kollu Ravindra said the southern campus of NIDM will be very useful to South Indian states.

Machilipatnam MP Konakalla Narayana, Special Secretary to the Government of Andhra Pradesh Manmohan Singh, Executive Director of NIDM Anil Kumar, District Collector B Lakshmikantham, local villagers and the officials of NIDM participated in the event.
