Visakhapatnam: SC Commission member K Ramulu directed the district administration to probe into the allegations of Dalit woman against forced surrogacy and submit the report within 24-hours.

Expressing his displeasure over the incident, he directed the administration to appoint a five-member doctors committee, including one doctor from SC community to inquiry into the incident. The member also directed the administration to submit the report on May 26. He also criticised that the hospitals and educational institutions have become commercial establishments instead of service institutions.

Ramulu, along with officials, visited the King George Hospital (KGH) and interacted with the Dalit woman and surrogacy victim. Presently, she is undergoing treatment at gynecology ward at the hospital.

Later, addressing the media, he said that not giving proper information about the surrogacy, the biological parents and hospital management lured her by offering Rs 25,000 to her. He demanded stringent action against the biological parents and hospital management.

He announced Rs 8 lakh compensation to the victim and assured to sanction a house and free education to her three children. He directed the social welfare department to take immediate steps to pay compensation and other incentives to the victim. “The victim told me that more number of victims in the hospitals. Directions have been issued to check the hospital to bring the facts into the light,” Ramulu said.

Meanwhile, speaking to the media, district medical and health officer (DMHO) Dr R Ramesh said that as per the directions a five- member committee would complete the inquiry and submit the report on May 26. “Already, I visited the hospital and checked the permissions to run the IVF Centre. The management is having a valid IVF certification and the committee will take up and the committee will take up a detailed inquiry”, Dr Ramesh said.
