Tirupati: The first ever live workshop on Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson’s disease was held at Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) here on Saturday.

In the workshop, a patient was operated to stimulate specific target in his brain at the operation theatre of SVIMS which was telecasted live in its auditorium explaining the procedure in detail to the 130 plus participants across the country.

Dr Krishna Kumar and Dr Shyam of Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), Trivandrum along with Dr Ramesh Chandra and neurosurgery team of SVIMS jointly performed the live DBS procedure for Parkinson’s disease successfully, said the Director Dr TS Ravikumar.

Speaking to the media, he described the procedure as a major step in SVIMS Neurosurgery department and said that the procedure which was too expensive was available in only a limited number of hospitals.

In public sector, such surgeries are not provided generally as it costs about Rs 20 lakh for a surgery which SVIMS can provide at a relatively lower price.

He observed that it involves a good expertise as lot of accuracy is important to target the particular area in the brain where the cells are to be stimulated.

“We are bringing high-end procedures to the Institute at much affordable rates for the sake of patients, who are in dire need of them,” he maintained.

The Head of Neurosurgery department Dr BCM Prasad said that this procedure will be useful for Parkinson’s disease and some other such diseases in which an electrode will be sent deep into the brain to stimulate the required cell with total accuracy without having any chances of missing the target.

The advantage of this DBS system will be that there will be no destruction and the results can be reversed.

In Andhra Pradesh, this procedure is not available anywhere which was possible in SVIMS because of the initiative of the Dr Ravikumar.

The procedure involves a lot of planning and every care has to be taken.

So far, SVIMS has performed 10 DBS surgeries free of cost. Earlier, Dr Krishna Kumar of SCTIMST, who supervised the surgery from theatre explained the procedure involved in the entire process.
