In a special drive, the Chittoor police rescued more than 100 destitute and insane persons across the district in the last two days. District Superintendent of Police (SP) SV Rajasekhara Babu has initiated the drive to protect the mentally-ill and abandoned persons as the state has been witnessing series of attacks on them suspecting as members of the Parthi gang. 

Tirupati: In a special drive, the Chittoor police rescued more than 100 destitute and insane persons across the district in the last two days. District Superintendent of Police (SP) SV Rajasekhara Babu has initiated the drive to protect the mentally-ill and abandoned persons as the state has been witnessing series of attacks on them suspecting as members of the Parthi gang.

The SP instructed the DSPs to identify mentally sick persons in rural areas and take steps for their protection. Several insane persons were identified in the police sub-divisions of Puttur, Palamaner, Madanapalle and Sri City. The cops gave hair-cut and shave and bath to them at police stations. Later, cops provided them with new clothes and fed them.

The DSPs were instructed to identify family members and relatives of mentally-ill and abandoned and unite them, if not, then send them to orphan homes. During the drive, it was found elderly persons were neglected by their children in the border villages of Andhra Pradesh-Tamil Nadu and in Madanapalle and Palamaner police sub-divisions.

The cops are contemplating to file cases against those children, who had neglected their parents, under maintenance clause under section 125 of the CrPC. The drive will go on till end of this week. Speaking to The Hans India, Palamaner DSP Chowdeswari said that more than 30 destitute and insane persons were rescued and sent them to orphan homes or to the houses of relatives.
