Kadapa: Farmers are shelling out more on agriculture operations due to diesel price hike by the Central government. According to sources, farmers will be irrigating various crops in 1.57 lakh hectares in the Kharif season. With the shortage of labourers, farmers are depending more on tractors, power weeders, harvesters and ploughing machines for raising crops.

P Rami Reddy, a farmer from Mekavaripalli village in B Kodur mandal said that he was forced to pay an additional amount of Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 per acre only because of hike in diesel tariff. Another farmer M Pedda Gurivi Reddy from Akkampalli village of Kasinayana mandal said that spending on agriculture operations has increased by 20 per cent after increase in diesel price.

“I am hopeful of securing minimum profits in the Kharif season as sufficient water is available in the reservoirs and other water bodies. Unfortunately, my hopes were dashed due to steep hike in diesel price,” he lamented. All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) district secretary B Dastagiri Reddy said farmers hiring 7,000 tractors on rent across the district for farming activities.

The rents of tractors have steeply increased with the hike in diesel price, he said, adding farmers in the district have to bear an additional burden of Rs 1.5 crore. He warned of intensifying the agitation if the Centre fails to roll back diesel price hike.
