Minister promises to hike tax on import of wood pulp

Ongole: MP YV Subbareddy and a delegation of farmers and their representatives from Prakasam district including Mareddy Subbareddy, Chunduri Rangarao, Bhairapuneni Suryanarayana, Janardhan, Venkateswarlu, met the Union Minister for National Highways and Transport Nitin Jairam Gadkari and Minister for Commerce and Industry Suresh Prabhu at their offices in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The delegates explained to the transport minister that the Ramayapatnam port was required for the development of the district.

Gadkari assured them that the Union government was ready to take the responsibility of constructing the Ramayapatnam port, but the state government should allocate the required land first.

They informed the minister for commerce and industry that the eucalyptus and jamail farmers were receiving a very low price for the wood and the industry was facing hardships for a while.

They also explained that many of the tobacco farmers in the district were ready to shift to alternate crops but require compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each of the barns.

They also expressed fear over the falling prices of tobacco in the auction.Suresh Prabhu assured to see imposing of more tax on the imports of wood pulp to help the local eucalyptus and jamail farmers.

He also promised to cooperate with the tobacco farmers and see a decision be taken on the compensation for tobacco farmers choosing alternate crops.

He assured the tobacco farmers that he would speak to the Tobacco Board secretary and other officials on action to be taken to stabilise the prices and help the farmers.

He also suggested the delegation to meet the agriculture minister to seek more help to the farmers of Andhra Pradesh.
