Srikakulam: A Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) member of Ponduru mandal belonging to the ruling TDP L Sriramulu Naidu reportedly violated rules pertaining to the Andhra Pradesh Mines and Mineral Department and excavated road metals from a quarry in the same mandal, according to the officials of the mines and geology department.

They confirmed the illegal mining activity and imposed a penalty of Rs 4, 05, 22, 250. They also issued a show-cause notice to him. Speaking to The Hans India here on Tuesday, assistant geologist (AG) of mines and geology department Dr R Pratap Reddy alleged that Naga Gayatri Stone Crushers proprietor and ZPTC member of Ponduru L Sriramulu Naidu was excavating road metals from a quarry located in Survey Nos. 33 and 137 at VR Gudem revenue village in the same mandal.

According to Rule-5 of AP Mines and Minerals Act, 1966, excavation of any mine or mineral without obtaining clearance from the mines and geology department is illegal. Earlier, Sairam Stone Crushers took a lease agreement in Survey No. 137, but it expired in 2010. Since then, no one applied for excavation for it in the existing quarry. Meanwhile, in Survey No. 33, illegal excavation of road metals was started by Naga Gayatri Stone Crushers.

The technical staff of the mines and geology confirmed that illegal excavation of 37,230 cubic metres of road metals took place. Mining activity continued till the end of April this year without paying dead rent, security deposit, seigniorage and district mineral fund (DMF). “We imposed a penalty of more than Rs 4 lakh”, said Dr R Pratap Reddy.

“We issued the show cause notice for payment of penalty to proprietor of Naga Gayatri Stone Crushers L Sriramulu Naidu on April 18. But till now, he did not reply to it and we would implement the Revenue Recovery Act against him”, the AG explained.

Instead of paying the penalty, the ZPTC was allegedly exerting pressure on us through local TDP MLA K Ravi Kumar and others which was not correct and the issue was brought to the notice of our director”, the officials of the mining department lamented.

“Stone quarry is not an illegal activity and we are not operating mining activity directly. The local people are maintaining the quarry and we will reply to the notice issued by the mines department by quoting field level facts”, proprietor of Naga Gayatri Stone Crushers, L Sriramulu Naidu told The Hans India over phone.
