Ongole: The KIMS Hospital in Ongole performed a rare surgery on a woman suffering from arteriovenous malformation and discharged her after she completely recovered, announced the hospital executive director, T Giri Naidu on Wednesday.

According to Giri Naidu, a 21-year-old woman Dasari Narmada from Darsi mandal in Prakasam district joined the KIMS in Ongole two weeks after she delivered a baby through cesarian surgery and was in a shock due to excessive bleeding.

After diagnosis, the doctors found that she has AVM (Arteriovenous Malformation) which was a rare problem found in one among 10,000 women.

In general, the treatment for the AVM involves removal of the uterus.

But the staff at KIMS including the gynecologist Prasanti Vemulapalli, interventional cardiologist G Obul Reddy and their team successfully blocked the veins that were causing the excessive bleeding, without surgery. With this treatment, the woman can have regular periods and conceive again, said the executive director.

The hospital general manager, Murthy Satuluri informed that the Rare AVM was treated for the first time in Prakasam district and the treatment was available in only a few centers.

The medical superintendent, Dr S Venkateswarlu added that the KIMS was offering a variety of treatments that were not yet available in any hospital in Ongole.
