Vijayawada: Everyone should strive for a tobacco free nation, said Medical and Health department additional director Dr Geetha Prasadini here on Thursday.
She was the chief guest at the awareness programme to mark World No Tobacco Day organised under the aegis of National Tobacco Control programme nodal officer Dr TVSN Sastry at Indian Medical Association (IMA) hall. A rally was organised to create awareness on the evil effects of tobacco consumption from Old Government Hospital to IMA hall.
She said that in spite of creating awareness on evil effects of consuming tobacco, implementation was not satisfactory. She said that everyone should know the consequences of taking tobacco and should avoid them.
Non-communicable diseases joint director P Rajendra Prasad said that in the name of westernization, women and youth were getting addicted to tobacco and tobacco products which was a big concern.
District Medical and Health Officer Dr Padmaja Rani warned that consumption of tobacco products by pregnant women would result in health problems for babies after birth.
