Visakhapatnam: The North Andhra brand, most popular and tasty mango varieties of Panukulamanu and Suvarnarekha have been receiving good response in the international market. The efforts of the Department of Horticulture to promote AP brand fruits and flowers on the global map is now giving good results.
For the first time in the history, the department has successfully exported ‘Panukulamanu,’ the early and less sweet mango variety, to Germany and receiving good response from the Germans. The department had exported another North Andhra brand “Suvarnareka” mangoes to South Korea last year and continued the same this year.
The Panukulamanu mango is a special variety which comes for harvesting early. They ripen in the months of February and March in every season. Very particularly, these mangoes are less sweet compared to the other varieties. The damage of the flowering is also less and even the summer is not set well the mangoes will grow to full shape and ready for ripening.
With this, several farmers raise Panukulamanu mango variety. This variety has good demand in Delhi, West Bengal, and northeastern states. The Horticulture Department constructed fully-automated ‘Integrated Pack House’ in Garividi of Vizianagaram district to export various fruits, particularly mangoes.
“With good response from the Koreans, we have exported “Panukulamanu” mangoes to Germany this year and registered a good response from them. This year we exported the fruits by air cargo. In the coming seasons, the exports will boost up and be expecting good returns, thanks to the Horticulture Department,” Sri Harsha, mango exporter of Vizianagaram, told The Hans India. The Integrated Pack House (IPH) is taking every bit of responsibility to ensure export quality by checking weight, preparation of trim sort grade, clean, wash, dry, quality check, packing and precool, naming of the maker and timely lifting of the product.
“Panukulamanu variety is a very safe horticulture crop. In terms of tonnage, quality, early ripening and less sweetness with good taste, the variety has been accepted well by the foreigners. “With the help of the IPH, the mango farmers will get good revenues in the coming seasons,” Deputy Director (Fruits) of Department of Horticulture P Hanumantha Rao told The Hans India.
