Guntur: Bapatla Government Women’s Degree College principal Dr J Bhagya Lakshmi said that world is swamped by harmful plastic waste.

Every year, more than 8 million tonnes of plastic waste ends up in the oceans.

World Environment Day was organised in Bapatla Government Degree College on Tuesday.
College principal Dr J Bhagya Lakshmi presided over the meeting.

Speaking on this occasion, she said that the micro-plastics in the seas now outnumber stars in our galaxy.

She said, “If present trends continue, by 2050, our oceans would have more plastic than fish and added that we are leaking 13 million tonnes of plastic in to ocean every year.

We are depleting the earth's natural resources, polluting its air and water, destabilising the climate and driving many of its species to extinction.

We have to come together and explore sustainable alternatives and urgently reduce the production and excessive use of single-use plastic polluting our oceans, damaging marine life and threatening human health.”

A pledge was taken in the meeting to the effect that only reusable goods will be used and plastic pollution will be beaten.

Forum For Better Bapatla secretary PC Sai Babu participated as chief guest.

Lecturers Nagaraju, Gopalakrishna Murthy spoke on the occasion.
