Vijayawada: Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) Commissioner J Nivas said that due to dumping of plastic waste and garbage into the canals the beauty of Vijayawada city has lost. Addressing the gathering at Nastika Kendram to mark the World Environment Day on Tuesday, he said that the corporation has taken up extensive programmes for the beautification of the canal bunds in the city.

He said that the people of Vijayawada should feel the responsibility to cooperate with the corporation to transform the Vijayawada into a clean city. He said that instead of using plastic carry bags they should use jute bags to control pollution, he added.

Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board joint chief environmentalist Dr Madhusudana Rao said plastic use was increasing day by day. He said that in the past 20 years, and with the rise in population, the plastic use has increased 20 times. He said that plastic usage was alarming and everyone should feel the responsibility to control it. A green rally was flagged off from AP Pollution Board office by the municipal commissioner.

He participated in the rally till the Nastika Kendram. About 1,000 people participated in the rally. Zilla Parishad Chairperson Gadde Anuradha, Dr Vijayam, Dr Samaram, Dr Maru, Hari Subramanyam, corporators Devineni Aparna, Ch Gandhi and others participated in the programme.
