World Environment Day has been celebrated in a grand manner by several institutes and organisations in Tirupati on Tuesday. Regional Science Centre and AP Pollution Control Board (APPCB) have jointly organised weeklong celebrations and the concluding ceremony was held on Tuesday.

The Head of department of Virology in Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) Prof DVR Sai Gopal participated as chief guest and explained the importance of environment protection. APPCB Engineer A Narendra Babu, Science Centre curator Balaji, Project Coordinator R Manigandan and others took part. They held a big rally in Tirupati on the occasion.

The Environment department of SVU has organised a programme of plantation in which Vice-Chancellor Prof A Damodaram, Rector Prof G Janaki Ramaiah, Registrar Prof RK Anuradha, Dean Prof Vijaya Bhaskar Rao and others participated and planted saplings.

The V-C has observed human beings can survive on this earth when everyone talks about its rights. Indian Institute of Public Administration, Tirupati local branch and SVU Health Centre also celebrated the day with the slogan ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ by planting 25 fruit bearing trees like mango, guava, tamarind, coconut etc., on the campus.

Senior Medical Officer Dr VB Mohan, Principal Prof G Savaraiah, Prof A Rangareddy, Prof T Lakshmamma, Dr A Samanthakamani, Prof D Ananda Naidu, Prof Swarajya Lakshmi and others participated.

Sri City celebrated World Environment Day with the culmination of week-long awareness campaign on ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ and the mitigation activities. Development Commissioner R Muthuraj, who was the chief guest, has urged the community to reduce the excessive use of plastics and explore sustainable alternatives.

The President (Operations) Satish Kamat gave a presentation on plastic pollution and the threats on future of our planet. Head (Environment Division) Dr Venkat, Customs Specified Officer C Vijaya Bhaskar and others were present.

Tirupati Chamber of Commerce has led the celebrations in which Praja Science Vedika, Vidya Parirakhsana Samithi, Rotary Club, ATMs Junior and Degree College, Gitams Jr College, and National Consumer Association have participated and organised a rally.

Speaking on the occasion, Chamber of Commerce President A Manjunath gave a call for use of jute bags in place of polythene covers. Municipal Commissioner Vijay Rama Raju has said that they will take steps for imposing a ban on the use of polythene covers. Chamber secretary P Madhusudana Rao and others were present.
