Nellore: Even though, the State government had deputed a Hyderabad-based agency for preparing Detailed Project Report (DPR) for beautification of Nellore tank and still the works are pending due to various reasons.

It was proposed to give facelift to the tank blocking flow of sewerage from street drains into the tank as per guidelines of the National River Conservation Directorate. The agency, Aarvee Agencies, completed the report but the project is non-starter.

State government has proposed to take up rejuvenation of Swarnala Cheruvu under the National Lake Conservation Plan and engaged Aarvee Agencies from Hyderabad for preparing a DPR, a couple of years ago. The tank is close to Bara Shahid Dargah and devotees visit the tank as and when they offer prayers.

The report mentioned about flow and treatment of sewerage from the city drains, development and maintenance of lake front, and plans for generation of revenue. Municipal Administration department also considered the project expecting assistance from the Government of India under National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems (NPCA).

The two centrally sponsored schemes such as National Wetland Conservation Programme (NWCP) and National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP) have been merged in 2013 naming as NPCA.

The basic aim was to develop the tank as a tourism spot and the consultant agency also suggested to maintain standard of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) in wastewater being generated. National River Conservation Directorate also suggested to maintain levels of the BOD and total suspended solids in the wastewater through proper treatment.

As part of the programme, the pollution levels in tank water and treatment of wastewater would be structured besides managing healthy atmosphere in the tank environs. Levels of faecal coliform through MPN method have to be done, according to a senior official. Once the project is completed, Nellore city residents can enjoy the tank beauty and use walkers’ track for walking in the clean environment.

“A senior official from the AP Urban Greening & Beautification Corporation Limited was directed in March last year to prepare master plan for beautification of the Tank. Still, the project is non-starter due to no proper allocation of funds by government except preparing plans every year. We are namesake and do whatever politicos say,” said an official.

Now, the Rs 30 crore project is being entrusted to Nellore Urban Development Authority (NUDA) instead of Nellore Municipal Corporation to be taken up under AMRUT scheme. Further, officials arranged CCTV cameras at Bara Shahid Dargah located close to the tank for security of the devotees and also to avoid activities of the anti-social elements.
