Kakinada: The Kakinada city and suburb areas have been facing drinking water crisis for the last one week due to shortage of water in Aratlakatta and Samarla Kota reservoirs.

The former in Karapa Mandal and the later in Samarla Kota town suburbs cater to the drinking water needs of five lakh city population.

The canal system from Dowlaiswaram barrage brings water to Kakinada canal and Aratlakatta reservoir besides Sambamurty reservoir at Samarla Kota.

From these two sources, water will be brought to Victoria Water Works, popularly known as Kublai Cheruvu, and its storage tank.

Due to the shortfall in regular supplies, the overall supplies to the 50 divisions of Kakinada Corporation were hit in the last one week. People in the suburb areas were hit very badly due to the shortage.

Several people in the areas had to depend on groundwater.

When contacted on the issue, Kakinada Municipal Corporation divisional engineer Satyanarayana Raju said on Thursday that the shortage would be over in the next two days, as the water from Dowlaiswaram barrage has been released on Wednesday to canal system.

By Thursday noon, water reached Pasalapiudi and would reach Kakinada area by Friday. “We are hoping for restoration of water supplies to city needs from Saturday,” the official clarified.

Meanwhile, “We have arranged for supplies to suburb areas through tankers,” the DE clarified.
