The State government gave administrative sanction to build another barrage across River Krishna at Vykuntapuram of Guntur district to serve the drinking water needs of the new capital Amaravati whose population is projected to touch 35 lakh by the year of 2050. The new barrage will have a storage capacity of 10 tmcft, in addition to the 3 tmcft at Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada. 

Amaravati: The State government gave administrative sanction to build another barrage across River Krishna at Vykuntapuram of Guntur district to serve the drinking water needs of the new capital Amaravati whose population is projected to touch 35 lakh by the year of 2050. The new barrage will have a storage capacity of 10 tmcft, in addition to the 3 tmcft at Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada.

The Water Resources Department has given administrative sanction for an amount of Rs 2,169 crore. The new barrage will come up exactly on River Krishna, 23 km upstream of existing Prakasam Barrage at Vykuntapuram village of Amaravati mandal in Guntur district.

Principal Secretary to Water Resources Department Shashibhushan Kumar directed the Chief Engineer of Krishna delta to obtain the approved designs from the Central Designs Organisation before giving technical sanction to the new barrage. The CRDA estimated that 900 MLD of water will be required for the drinking water and industrial needs of capital city by 2050.
