Visakhapatnam: All are equal before the law. No one will be exempted if there is a traffic rule violation or for that matter in commission of any crime, and that includes the police.

This is the warning of the Visakhapatnam Police Commissionerate to the offenders and traffic violators. Proving the sincerity of the warning, Commissioner of Police T Yoganand levied penalty on eleven police personnel, including one sub-inspector, who violated traffic rules.

The commissionerate provided a WhatsApp number to the people to post details and pictures of the violators. Some youths had taken a few images of the police personnel violating the traffic rules and posted them on the WhatsApp number wanting the Commissioner to take action against the police personnel.

Accepting the challenge gracefully, the Commissioner imposed a fine of Rs 1,635 on one of his sub-inspectors. The Police Commissioner after seeing an image of his sub-inspector riding a bike without helmet, asked his officers to inquire why he was driving without a helmet. Then they came to know that he does not even have a driving licence.

Similar procedure was followed in respect of a police constable who was driving a bike without insurance and pollution-free certificate. Taking a serious note of the Commissioner not sparing the policemen, officials have fined eleven police personnel for not wearing helmets, for riding vehicles without driving licence, insurance and pollution certificate. The police have collected a total of Rs 6,295 from the violators on June 6.

Yoganand said: “We have already informed our men to abide by the traffic rules and set an example for others. If any policeman is found violating the traffic norms, we would not spare him.”

He says that no two-wheeler would be allowed on the roads without the driver wearing a helmet and without valid documents, including pollution control certificate. Similarly, no four-wheeler would be allowed on the roads without the driver wearing a seat-belt. “Policemen are no exception,” he said.
