Tirupati: Both students and parents gradually preferring government schools to private schools where they have to pay hefty fees. The number of applications for admissions has increased in various government/municipal schools and government has been taking several steps to attract students.

The state government launched Virtual Class Rooms, free cycles, free text books and uniforms, mid-day meal scheme etc., to increase enrolment. In the same breath, to improve attendance and academic performance of girl students, Government introduced ‘Badikosta’ scheme during 2016-17 academic year.

Now the government intends to distribute free cycles to class 8 and 9 girl students this year for which Rs.140 crore was ear marked and Chittoor district gets Rs.12 crore for the scheme. In Chittoor district about 32000 girl students have been studying their 8 and 9 classes in about 520 government high schools.

Regarding this scheme we have to get further instructions from the government”, said the District Educational Officer (DEO) Dr K Panduranga Swamy. He told The Hans India that apart from cycles, girl students of classes 9 and 10 have been trained in self-defence techniques like Karate etc., For this one teacher was appointed for six schools who visits one school daily and train students for about two hours.

This is a four-month programme and will be continued this year also which helps girl students to protect them from eve teasing, molestation, atrocities etc.. The programme was designed by Rashtriya Madhyamika Siksha Abhiyan (RMSA).

Also, it was proposed to distribute five eggs per week in mid-day meal from this year instead of three eggs. Concentrating more on enrolment, ‘Badi pilustondi’ scheme has been implemented under which teachers of each government school have to enrol 100 per cent students in their respective areas.

They have to identify all five-plus- year students and enrol them in Class I. Similarly, to avoid dropouts they have to admit Fifth class passed out students and enrol them in in Class VI.

The DEO said that, as more and more parents have been asking for English medium it was proposed to start parallel sections in English medium in Class I from this academic year.

In Chittoor district out of 4000 plus primary schools 450 schools were identified which have 40 plus strength to start English Medium. Students in government schools will get free text books and the distribution was going on and will be completed by the end of this month.

Students of Class 1 to 8 will get two pairs of uniform per annum from APCO. This will be distributed in 20 mandals in the first phase soon. One studio for Virtual Class Room (VCR) will be built in Chittoor from where experienced faculty will teach lessons.

Through fibre grid communication, the quality education reaches all children through virtual class rooms. In every government school there will be one VCR or Digital class room (DCR) and it benefits them significantly”, DEO Swamy maintained.
