Vijayawada: As part of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), the police department has organised a free medical camp for senior citizens at various hospitals under the aegis of Police Commissioner D Goutam Sawang on Friday. Over 1,000 senior citizens underwent free health checkups across 19 centres in the city.

Water Resources Minister Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao hailed the city police commissioner for addressing the problems faced by the senior citizens besides dealing with the law and order problems.

He expressed happiness for various government organisations, the NGOs, the hospitals, the Bezwada Bar Association and the banks for taking part actively in the programme.

The Commissioner said that the department was providing better service to the senior citizens, women and children through Balya Mitra, Mahila Mithra and Vrudha Mithra. He said the department was organising various service activities to build accessibility and confidence among people.

He said that cases were booked against those who deserted senior citizens and creating trouble for them. He said that every year they were organising various programmes to mark the WEAAD with the support of various organisations. They organised a free medical camp and distributed medicines to elderly and created awareness among aged over legal matters.

Over 1,000 senior citizens underwent health checkup at the mega medical camp organised at 19 centres in the city. The senior citizens were examined for ailments for eye, dental, kidney, joint pains, sugar, BP, general checkup, gynec and other diseases. Tests were conducted and medicines were distributed free of cost.

Health camps were held at Singari hospital, Andhra hospital, Sandhya Eye hospital, Liberty hospital, Dr Pallem Pediswara Rao heart care, MJ Naidu, AP Super Specialty Hospital, Endocare, Anu Hospital and other hospitals in the city.
