Vijayawada/Guntur: Muslims in the capital region of Amaravati celebrated Ramzan with gaiety and fervour on Saturday.

Mosques were illuminated and decorated with the announcement of clerics about the festival to be celebrated after 30 days of fasting.

In Vijayawada, namaz was offered at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium under the auspices of Idgah Committee and the district administration.

Namaz was offered at Chitti Nagar Dargah, Minar Masjid in Islampet, Shahi Masjid in Wynch Pet, Jumma Masjid at Market Centre and other mosques in Arundelpet, Labbipet and Bhavanipuram, Ajit Singh Nagar Idgah.

Similarly, Ramzan was celebrated in Old Guntur, Nehru Nagar and other parts of the city.

Thousands of Muslims wearing traditional dresses participated festivities and offered namaz in different parts of Guntur on Saturday.

Muslims greeted each other on the occasion. Muslims shared the happy festival with Hindu and Christian brethren by offering delicious sheer khurma on Saturday.

After 30 days of fasting, the eid was celebrated with gaiety and fervour in the capital region.

Hundreds of police were posted near the mosques and darghas to prevent any untoward incident.

Leaders of political parties visited mosques and Idghas and greeted the Muslims to mark the festival.

The leaders, including Ministers Devineni Umamaheswara Rao, Kollu Ravindra, N Anand Babu, P Pulla Rao, Wakf Board Chairman and MLA Jaleel Khan and several MLAs were also present. They also took part in the prayers and greeted the Muslims.
