Vizianagaram: A research project “Integrated water management through rejuvenation of surface tanks in Vizianagaram town” has been awarded by Government of India with a grant of Rs 87.53 lakh to MVGR College of Engineering. Dr R Maheswaran, department of civil engineering would supervise the project.

Vizianagaram Municipality and Irrigation and Command Area Development, Govt of Andhra Pradesh are collaborating with this project and providing technical manpower and designs, equivalent to an amount of Rs 16.80 lakh for its implementation in the field.

This prestigious project involves design and modeling for conservation of water, including flood water and surface run-off and its channelisation to tanks located in Vizianagaram. State of the art techniques like digital elevation models and hydrological tools will be used to come out with optimum flood water conservation methods.

The outcome of the project will come out with ways and means of treating flood water and making it safe for agriculture. The findings of study can be replicated for large catchment area meeting the societal needs in near future.

This major project was granted to MVGR College of Engineering against stiff competition at national-level with premier institutions like IITs and national research laboratories participating in this important programme, under demand driven convergent solutions category of water technology initiative that DST launched recently.
