He participated in the ‘Mee Mungitlo Ravaanaa Sakha (Transport department at your doorstep) programme at the ZP High School in Mandadam village under Tulluru mandal in the district on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, Atchannaidu reminded that earlier people had to go to RTA office and pay bribes even for learner’s licences. Stating that though some people know driving, they were not taking licences, he said the transport department was conducting melas to issue driving licences to such people.
He said credit for bringing services of the department to the doorsteps of people goes to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, he urged the people to avail the facility provided by the government.
According to him, the transport department officials during the first phase hold melas for issue of LLRs (learner’s licences) in colleges and in second phase, the melas would be organised in villages to issue licences to all those who knew driving.
Atchannaidu said the government was striving hard to reduce road accidents and reminded that committees headed by district collectors were constituted in this regard. He said that the government would introduce life tax for autorickshaws soon. Later, the minister distributed speed guns to the officials of various districts. He also distributed LLRs to the successful applicants.
Transport department commissioner N Balasubrahmaniam said that following instructions of the Chief Minister they had been conducting melas for the last three months and distributed one lakh driving licences.
He said the government had allocated Rs 10 crore to purchase necessary equipment to check road accidents. He said that they had bought 49 speed guns, 420 breathalysers and added that they would distribute the equipment to the police and transport department wings to reduce road mishaps.
