Amaravati: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who remains calm even in the face of extreme provocation, lost his temper when Nayi Brahmins (barbers) tried to obstruct his convoy of cars at the Secretariat here on Monday, and shouted at them that trying to stop his vehicle was not the way they should choose to seek regularisation of their services at temples.

Naidu was about to leave the Secretariat in the evening when Nayi Brahmins gathered around him and drew his attention to their meagre income and wanted him to regularise their services. They have been on strike for the last few days and came to the Secretariat on being called by Minister for Endowments KE Krishna Murthy.

The Nayi Brahmins demanded salary of Rs 15,000 per month along with other benefits. But the Minister consented to payment of Rs 25 per each tonsure done at the temples which was just Rs 13 till date. The Nayi Brahmins raised slogans and began staging a protest in front of the convoy forcing Naidu to come out of his car.

He went to them and inquired with them as to what their problem was. When Naidu was explaining to the them that the government could offer Rs 25 per tonsure at the temples, one of the leader from the group shouted at him that that they had voted TDP to power and therefore he should regularise their services.

Naidu then flew into a rage at them, asking them to know how to make a representation to the Chief Minister on a problem. "There is a way to do anything. This is not the way to represent your problems to me. You be careful about what you say or do in future," he said.

Naidu turned to officials asking them who had allowed Nayi Brahmins inside the Secretariat. "Who has let them in? Is this Secretariat or fish market,” he asked and warned Nayi Brahmins that if they behave once again in an unruly way, he would not care about them in future.

Later speaking to media persons, Inturi Babji, Nayi Brahmana Yuva Sena state president, who was one among those who had argued with the Chief Minister, said that they had called a state bandh of all hair cutting saloons in the state on Tuesday, and that they would stage protests at the collectors' offices. As a majority of hair-cutting saloons are closed on Tuesdays anyway, the leaders hope that their brethren would take part in protests in big numbers.
