Tirupati: To transform varsity campuses into eco-friendly in temple city, in-campus cycle sharing system will be introduced soon. In this direction, a meeting was convened by District Collector PS Pradyumna and Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) Commissioner Vijay Rama Raju two days ago in which Vice-Chancellors of three universities attended. It was decided in the meeting to implement cycle sharing in all the varsity campuses in Tirupati with the smart city funds.

In the first phase, the initiative would be implemented in the Sri Venkateswara University (SVU), Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University (SVVU) and Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam (SPMVV). More than 15,000 students and 3,000 teaching and non-teaching staff in these universities are using personal vehicles in the campuses for mode of transport resulting in increase of pollution levels. After few days, cycle sharing would be extended to Sri Venkateswara Vedic University and SVIMS campuses.

The civic staff and Germany-based cycle making company will sensitise the students on adverse effects of using petrol and diesel run vehicles in the campuses. The students and teaching and non-teaching staff can use bicycles with swipe cards. They can leave bicycles in the campuses at any designated docking stations.

There is no need for them to come back again for parking the cycles in the same place where they have picked them. SVU and SVVU would construct the parking slots for bicycles near main entrances and inside the campuses at various departments and hostels. Once the students and employees enter the campuses, they should leave their personal cars or bikes at the entrance and reach their respective departments on cycles.

According to municipal sources, the cycle sharing project would be inaugurated on or before July 15. Speaking to The Hans India, SVVU Vice-Chancellor Y Haribabu has confirmed of attending a high-level meeting with the Collector and civic chief over the implementation of cycle sharing in the campuses. While welcoming the initiative, Haribabu said the carbon emissions would come down in the campuses. Also, riding cycles would benefit the students and employees in maintaining fitness, he stated.
