TV serials should stop projecting women as villains: Nannapaneni
AP Mahila Commission chairperson Nannapaneni Rajakumari expressed concern over the TV serials which are projecting women as villains. She said she would continue her fight against some media channels, which are projecting women as villains in the society.
Vijayawada: AP Mahila Commission chairperson Nannapaneni Rajakumari expressed concern over the TV serials which are projecting women as villains. She said she would continue her fight against some media channels, which are projecting women as villains in the society.
Rajakumari was the chief guest at the inaugural function of the two-day workshop on ‘Legal awareness programme on women-related laws’, here on Thursday. Women police officers, women lawyers, Mahila Mitras, Mahila Mitra coordinators, representatives of various NGOs, teachers, students and others participated in the workshop.
Speaking on the occasion, Rajakumari said that she had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the projection of women as villains in TV serials. She said laws should be amended so that the TV serials can be brought under the purview of law as in case of films. Referring to the censoring of films by the Censor Board, she felt such an agency should be set up in the country to control the TV serials.
She informed the gathering that she, too, was addicted to watching the TV serials. She said some TV serials are very horrible where women kill husbands, own mothers and mothers-in-law. Expressing concern over the impact of the serials on the society, she stressed the need to change the tendency of the TV channels.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Gajarao Bhupal said many laws were amended in the country after the Nirbhaya incident in Delhi. He said women under the police commissionerate in Vijayawada can visit any police station to get help from the police. Bhupal said awareness programmes on laws will be very useful to the womenfolk to fight for their rights and get justice.
DCP (Crime) Shireen Begum said that the mindset of people should change in the society. She said mothers should play very important role in changing the perception of men about women by teaching their sons to respect women. If a married person gets support from his mother, he harasses his wife more, the DCP felt.
She said women were progressing very well in all spheres of life and more steps should be taken to achieve equality. ZP chairperson Gadde Anuradha said there has been lot of change in the society in the last 30 years. She said women achieved success in several professions and were feeling more confident compared to the past. She pointed out that only women could understand the problems of women.
