The Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) has bagged the AP Green Award-2017 in Public Sector Units category. The VPT also bagged first and second prizes in individual home gardens for Chairman’s bunglow and Deputy Chairman’s bunglow respectively.

Visakhapatnam: The Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) has bagged the AP Green Award-2017 in Public Sector Units category. The VPT also bagged first and second prizes in individual home gardens for Chairman’s bunglow and Deputy Chairman’s bunglow respectively.

The Andhra Pradesh Greening and Beautification Corporation (APGBC) has announced AP Green Awards 2017 in various categories here on Monday.

The VPT has developed 10 mw solar power plant and out of 15 lakhs units generated by the plant, 9 lakhs units were consumed by the port and balance was connected to the grid, the APGBC said.

The VPT has already developed 10 MLD STP for conservation of natural resources like water and the treated water is being used for dust suppression while handling bulk cargoes like coal and thus VPT is contributing towards environment protection.

Under Green Visakha Plantation programme, the VPT has planted 1.75 lakh saplings in its operational areas in the last three years and developed 8 km long central median within port premises including Convent Junction, Sheela Nagar junction, ‘Y’ junction, PCR Junction and B-Ramp junction dully incorporating various landscaping features.

The VPT has taken up translocation of 360 plants which are being affected in the road widening from PCR junction to RCL junction behind airport in port connectivity road thereby facilitating conservation, protection and preservation of the plants.

As part of Mission Green, VPT has taken up beautification and landscaping works in its bunglows of Harbour Park which were severely affected in 2014 by Hudhud cyclone, dully considering rain water harvesting along with vermin-compost units including kitchen and fruit gardens apart from solar power generation..

During 2018-19 and 2019-20, Visakhapatnam Port Trust has planned to take up 2 lakh shelter belt plantations to preserve and protect the Visakhapatnam coast line through AP Forest department at a cost of Rs 2.30 crore.
