Vijayawada: After the ghastly accident claimed nine lives in Kurnool district two days ago, the Krishna district transport department officials decided to take stringent action against the drivers, who violate rules on national highways and state highways.

Driving of auto rickshaws and other vehicles on wrong side is a common phenomenon on the highways in Krishna district. All national highways passing via Krishna district have dividers and road cuttings are located at distant places.

The drivers have to travel at least one or two km to take U turn. To avoid it, many drivers of two wheelers, auto rickshaws and other vehicles pass on the wrong route to reach the destination. It causes many accidents on the state highways and national highways.

In order to prevent driving in the wrong direction, the transport department has decided to ensure strict road safety rules in the district. Deputy transport commissioner E Meera Prasad on Tuesday convened a meeting at his office and instructed the officials to produce the vehicle drivers in the court immediately if the latter violated the road safety rules.

After the meeting, speaking to the media, he said passing of vehicles in wrong direction is strictly prohibited. He said till now the transport department officials used to collect penalty from drivers for violation of rules.

And now, the drivers will be produced in the court for violation of rules particularly driving vehicles in wrong route or parking vehicles at wrong places on highways and important roads. He said the transport department had received speed guns and breathalysers and they will be sent to the officials across the district very soon.

He said efforts were on to check overloading of passengers in auto-rickshaws and other passenger vehicles and driving of vehicles by unlicensed persons. He said LLR Melas were organised in 140 villages from June 18 to 24 and it evoked a huge response. He said 11,262 candidates appeared for LLR test and 9,241 of them were qualified.

He said the candidates, who qualified in the LLR test, can apply for driving test after 30 days and before six months. He said Krishna district stood first in the state in conducting LLR Melas where 11,262 candidates appeared. The motor vehicle inspectors and other staff attended the meeting.
