Tirupati: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman K Sivan has said India would face acute shortage of drinking water and several cities in India would become unliveable for people.

There is every possibility of next world war for drinking water, he predicted. Sivan has delivered the 55th convocation address after receiving the honorary doctorate from the Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) Vice-Chancellor Prof A Damodaram at Srinivasa Auditorium on the premises of the varsity here on Saturday.

The ISRO chief further said several issues like poverty, hunger, sanitation, providing quality education to students, supply of clean drinking water to people, increasing the income of farmers, creation of urban infrastructure and employment generation are yet to be resolved despite India progressing in the last 50 years.

Once again, Sivan has stressed the next world war would break out for drinking water. In the last six decades, the space technology benefits have not only surpassed all expectations but have also created a talented pool of professionals and a capable industry which has been playing the role of a catalyst in the nation’s progress,” the ISRO chairman said.

Sivan has exhorted students to become part of the nation building as there is ample scope for innovation and entrepreneurship. He informed the ISRO has made the GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) satellite operational and one of its services is to extend support for the Indian Railways in providing safety at unmanned level crossings.

“Our Navigation Indian Constellation (NavIC) is also operational. We are planning to provide NavIC services for potential fishing zone information and disaster alert system for fishermen community,” Sivan stated.

Earlier, the V-C submitted the varsity annual report and awarded the degrees for UG, PG and MPhil, PhD students. Later, he has presented more than 100 gold medals to the students, who excelled in academic and professional courses.

SVU Rector Prof Janakiramaiah, Registrar Prof RK Anuradha, deans, college principals, teaching and non-teaching staff and students were present.
