Fate of aided colleges in West Godavari district hangs in balance

Bhimavaram: With private colleges mushrooming in West Godavari district, the fate of government aided junior colleges is hanging in balance.

Shortage of teaching staff is haunting them apart from decreasing number of students. As a result, Intermediate education has become a distant dream to the poor, BC and SC students hailing from rural areas.

Out of dozen junior aided colleges, only a few have succeeded in competing with private college. Many colleges are on the verge of closure for different reasons.

Many students from rural background had been abruptly stopping education as pursuing Intermediate in private colleges has become an expensive affair.

Gollu Venkanna Women’s College was already closed reflecting the pathetic state of aided colleges.

The aided colleges located at Veeravasaram, Kamavarapu Kota and other locations have been playing a key role in educating rural youth. However, the maintenance of these colleges has become difficult.

The educationalists suggest that the government should appoint lecturers to aided colleges on contract basis and take initiative to establish the aided colleges at places where there were no government junior colleges.
