Heart surgery on 5-day-old successful

Vijayawada: A rare and complex open heart surgery was performed on a 5-day-old baby successfully at Ramesh Hospitals here.

Addressing the media here on Tuesday, Dr Ramesh Babu, managing director of Ramesh Hospitals said the cardiology department of the hospital had conducted Fetal Echo Scan on a seven month pregnant woman and identified ‘Transposition of Great Artery’ a rare heart disease.

Because of this rare heart disease, the blood flow is restricted within the lungs and the heart and the risk increases for the new born as days progress.

If not operated in time they would survive for a maximum two months, said that doctor.
